Asean Connect is a people to people project initiated by Singapore Polytechnic in collaboration with UMY. The project aim is to teach student how to solve social problem using business approach. The approach known as social enterprises or social entrepreneurship.
We picked two village as our case study. The first village is Badran located just 1 km from Tugu Station by Winono riverside. Badran had developed Bank Sampah or Garbage Bank
The garbage bank operation is so simple. People (usually houswife ) can collect garbage and bring it to garbage bank to be weighed. The garbage weigh than converted to some amount of money and recorded in the check book just like we make our saving in the bank. The difference is in normal bank we bring money and in garbage bank we bring garbage. The money saving can be used by the member to buy some daily goods or even the can borrow some money for consumption or business. Smart isn’t it? By doing this they can simply solve two problems, first how to manage garbage and second educate people to manage their saving.
Badran is not only known by its garbage bank, the also well known by their initiative in water management. Sincr the live on the river bank, having clean water is always an issue. Luckily the have a spring water. But the spring water is located in the other side of river. So housewife , some of them are elderly have to manage to cross the river to get some clean water everyday.
The initiative the manage this issue is to build a water pump to move the water to upper ground where people live.
This initiative help by Kotakita a local NGO focused on urban housing. Kotakita help villager to prepare a proposal and finally get the money to build the water system from one of Bank’s CSR program.
This program worked and made a great success. There are 40 household now connected with this system. Now the can have clean water and just need to pay very small money monthly. This paymen is much cheaper than the money the need to pay for government water system.
The next problem is how to scale up this project so it can capture more household. In this village there are around 200 household and there is only 40 household now that can use this system.
Singapore Poly students and UMY student use this as a case study for social entrepreneurship. Can business approach be used to solve social problem in Badran?
First we gather the students and divide the into 3 groups per village.
Then we briefed them on social enterprise methodology and the condition of the village.
Each group than discuss on their strategy on how they will finish the project.
After done some interview to continou to look closer to the surrounding of the village tp grab more understanding of the problems and needs.
They learnt that Badran had won some award on Green and Clean Village. They educate the villager to separate garbage into three groups, which are organic, plastic and non reusable. They used organic garbage as fertilizer and made some merchandise out of plastic to minimize the non reusable garbage.
After done the field work for the whole day the students come back to UMY students hostel to refining the ideas and prepare for presentation.
The next day people of Badran gathered to hear the student presentation for the garbage and water management project.
People in Badran very excited to the presentation. The agreed mostly to the ideas brought by students. Some of the ideas are very good yet so simple to be implemented. Really beyond our expectation.
We discsuss some follow up and potential future cooperation with UMY, villager and people in Badran.
We will continou on the other social enterprises project in Santan Village on the next post.
We are happy for any comments or inquiry on those project. This project really useful to teach students on how to cooperate with various people from very different background to tacke real problem in the field.
